What is CBD? What you need to know.
CBD is one of 483 compounds in cannabis, 113 of which are cannabinoid compounds. First isolated in 1942, it is a phytocannabinoid in cannabis that interacts with the endocannabinoid system in humans. Unlike delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other main cannabinoid for which the cannabis plant is consumed and is famous, CBD does not induce intoxicating effects.
- It can be absorbed by inhalation via smoke/vapor, aerosol spray, by ingestion via the mouth, and with consumer reports its effectiveness as a topical applied through the skin.
- The only FDA-approved prescription is epidiolex, used to treat epilepsy.
- CBD has potential for pain-relief, anti-anxiety, to treat psychosis, and is marketed for inducing deeper sleep.
- Cannabidiol does not have any intoxicating effects (i.e. "getting high") such as those caused by ∆9-THC in marijuana. In fact, research indicates that CBD may reduce adverse effects of THC, particularly those causing intoxication and sedation, but only at high doses. Some research suggests CBD counteracts the effects of THC, thus taming the high.
- Research suggests both CBD and THC appear to work better side by side. One of the easiest ways to consume both molecules at the same time is smoking raw flower. Select a strain that features equal parts THC and CBD and fire it up. These varieties provide enough THC to kickstart your CB1 receptors alongside adequate levels of CBD to stave off any adverse effects. Emerging research suggests that a ratio of 1:1 THC to CBD is optimal.
Why all the hype?
Ever since the passage of the Farm Bill in 2018, which legalized the cultivation of hemp, CBD has grown in popularity, as CBD is extracted from hemp. Hemp products have sprung about, in the form of oils, gummies, and topicals. Note, however, any of these CBD products are not regulated by the FDA.

More research is coming out on the potential benefits of this cannabinoid. More regulation is inevitable, as well. The main thing for potential consumers is to educate themselves, and buy from a reputable source, with certificates of analyses.
